Chernobyl as a Wildlife Sanctuary

Over the weekend, I was watching this show called Word Travels, when they did a small story on the city of Chernobyl. There were these two reporters walking through the area, taking radiation counts when suddenly this small butterfly landed on the instrument. I remember one of the two individuals talking about the irony of it all.

That got me to thinking, I wonder what has become of nature in this desolate region? Turns out it’s still thriving. This according to the Mary Mycio over at Slate from last year. The article is entitled “Do Animals in Chernobyl’s Fallout Zone Glow? The Scientific Debate About Europe’s Unlikeliest Wildlife Sanctuary“.
