Rewilding

I love the term, rewild. In a world that seems like it’s in a constant state of development, it’s a breath of fresh air to see a group trying to return the land back to what it was before we got here. The article is entitled “The New Outdoor Getaway: Landscapes That Have been ‘Rewilded’” by Nina Sovich over at the Wall Street Journal.

Wildfires

I must admit over the years of writing I’ve always been fascinated with wildfires. What they do in the sense of death and re-birth to the land. I think the first book I read on wildfires was Fire Season: Field Notes from a Wilderness Lookout by Philip Conners.

Tonight I have two more articles on the topic. They are entitled “How a Wildfire Kicked Up a 45,000-foot Column of Flames ” by Kyle Dickman over at Popular Science and “Great Plains Wildfires Used to be Rare. Not Anymore” by John Upton at The Grist. The reality is that they are becoming more the norm.

All the time in the world

If you get the chance, and I’m hoping I will, check out this article and the movie (yes, I’ve already read the article). The article is entitled “‘All the Time in the World’ is a beautiful film about a family living in the Yukon wilderness” by Katherine Martinko over at Treehugger.

I will be the first to admit it’s something the kids and I might not be able to handle but at the same time, we have our own place where we have all the time in the world and that’s our cabin up north.

While my kids no doubt say “not right now” more than I care to hear, I fell like on vacation they have more of that “sure, let’s do it” attitude and that’s what I love most about vacation.

In fact, the last couple of years we’ve explored Duluth (even Milwaukee and Madison last year) and this year it’s going to be Mt. Rushmore. I know that we’re all looking forward to it. Only seven more months to go!

Wilderness

So what is wilderness? That’s the question that the book “”Satellites in the High Country: Searching for the Wild in the Age of Man” by Jason Mark tries to answer. Unfortunately, I haven’t read the book yet but I did just interlibrary loan it since my library doesn’t own it. I’ll keep you posted.

Oh yea, I almost forgot. The article I came across about the book is entitled “Is there such a thing as wilderness anymore?Author Jason Mark looks for wilderness in the age of man and finds it in unexpected places” by Jaymi Heimbuch over at the Mother Nature Network
